I heard it was because it was the general shape of two real hearts put together, symbolizing a kinship.

whether that’s true or not, who knows.

I’ve never heard of it being that shape because of a flower like a few other people are saying here.

And actual heart comes to a point at the bottom and has two rounder atria at the top. Over time, the icon became simplified and more symmetrical representation of the heart. (Real hearts are lumpier, lopsided, and less iconic unless you take the time to render them in lots of detail)

This happens to lots of icons, where an image becomes simplified but people still recognize the meaning behind it, even if they haven’t seen the item that the icon originally represented. (a good recent example are kids who recognize the save icon 💾 but have never seen a floppy; as we move further from the age of floppy disk, that icon grows more abstract and simplified)

I heard of a possible origin that hasn’t been mentioned yet.

Some artist had a beautiful wife and one day the wife bended over before him naked, and he liked that shape so much, that he created the heart shape.

It might just be some urban legend, but since the other answers are also speculations, I think this is equally likely to be true

What I heard was that the heart represents the outline of a lady bending over. So it’s essentially a buttocks.

Well, having done this a few times, try cutting open a deer heart. It’s fairly similar to ours. If you slice it vertically and then put them side by side, you get that shape.
