I remember reading that since the hair is trapped and not growing outwards, it thickens up because there’s little to no wear and tear normal hair would face when it grows normally.

Thicker hairs are more likely to become ingrown. Confirmation bias makes you believe they’re always thick but thinner hairs that become ingrown usually clear up on their own because there’s less pore space to infect and less surface area of cells to exfoliate away before becoming a real problem. Search your body all over right now I guarantee some small in ingrown hairs are present you don’t realize you have and never would the same way a large follicle presents itself.
