Why are many Western brands (cars, apparel, houseware, etc) considered “luxury” brands in non-Western parts of the world?

Especially as many of these products are partially or entirely manufactured in non-Western countries.

Because of the cost and quality. Just because a Banana Republic shirt is made in Sri Lanka doesn’t mean that people there can readily afford to buy one.
