The moose ancestors with antlers like that did a better job of getting to breed than the ones with a different antler structure. There is no intelligence in the design of nature, it’s all survival of the fittest.

I believe it’s related to mating displays. The bigger and broader the antlers, the more likely they were to couple with a female moose and reproduce.

One theory is they work as sound amplification. Bull moose are solitary animals and giant, curved sheets of bone right next to their ears might help them hear a mate or other moose activity, like some bulls jousting.
