Why are most trophies shaped like expensive cups?

The design that pops into people’s heads when they think of a trophy is based on a “loving cup”, a cup with two handles and formerly part of wedding traditions in parts of Europe. The two handles symbolize the two people being joined in marriage and they would both drink (usually wine) from the same cup as part of the ceremony. That tradition is no longer widely practiced but the design has carried over into the trophy, another ceremonial cup for a happy occasion.
