I believe mechanical beam scales are technically balances and not “scales” with like springs or anything that require calibration.

You can’t refute the measure of a beam scale, and you can validate the weight of the…weights with a known good reference set.

I remember my chemistry teacher going on about why it was important but not what was said that day.
