Why are soldering irons so long?

I think it’d be way more precise to have a soldering iron where the tip is close to your fingertips, just like a pen.

Thermodynamics! The precision you imagine would be negatively effected by the loss of dexterity caused by your fingers burning. Plus, you want a decently sized thermal mass to help maintain tip temperature during use.
