Why are soldering irons so long?

I think it’d be way more precise to have a soldering iron where the tip is close to your fingertips, just like a pen.

“The power of the sun in the palm of your hands” is all good and stuff until you realise your hands have melted.

So we use a stick.

Cheap consumer irons are super long, they use a much older and simpler design.

Most modern and professional grade irons are a lot shorter. Look at high end Weller and Hakko, or JBC and Metcal irons. Shorter and thinner than the home depot special.

Get a Pace soldering station. Problem solved. 🙂

Seriously, though, better stations have much more ergonomic handles for the irons.

A soldering iron… close to your fingertips?

That’s how you get burned! Soldering irons are extremely hot!

If you designed a shorter soldering iron, then you would get more precise, but you’d also have to design some sort of heat protection for your hand, and every design I can think of would result in the soldering iron being more bulky and less precise.

Thermodynamics! The precision you imagine would be negatively effected by the loss of dexterity caused by your fingers burning. Plus, you want a decently sized thermal mass to help maintain tip temperature during use.

I am thinking it might be harder to see what you’re doing if your fingers are closer to the tip, but that’s a guess with very limited soldering experience.
