Why are some animals oviparous while others viviparous?

Both have drawbacks and advantages. just laying eggs and leaving them there means the mother is not hindered in her normal abilities for an extended period. But they are also more vulnerable to predators. There are many more factors to it. So some animals just evolved to have one over the other, depending on the niche they inhabit.

It’s like why some vehicles are small and light (car) and some are big and heavy (big TRUCKS for cargo). Different things for different circumstances.

Eggs work for some circumstances but other times not. Some species do one thing and others do different. The other comment has some good info.

Also you should look up egg-laying in Wikipedia or on Google. Scientists have a lot of info about it.
