My maiden name, Crowley is from Gaelic for Cruadhlaoich ( means war hero) and it was anglicized.

My German relatives who came to the USA had names changed by the preachers writing them down in the family Bible, by how it sounded to them. The first one that comes to mind is that Ernst became Earnest.
