World maps are inaccurate because it is depicting a round thing (earth) on a flat thing (flat paper).
So, in order to get a round thing onto a flat thing, you have to reshape the landmasses a bit, making some (near the poles) larger and others (near the equator) smaller. There are a variety of different [map projections](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_projection) that draw the world in different ways to accurately portray different aspects of the world, but you can’t account for everything without actually putting it all on a roughly spherical surface.
