I have seen programs that talk about their size and one key factor is air cooling for the car batteries.
Phones can also overheat and will shut down if too hot.

Space management.

Tesla’s and a lot of other manufacturers use cylindrical cells in multiple (18650) .

18650 cells are very wide / thick. Flat cells can be made thin, where space is at a premium.
