Why are the Total Carbs listed on a nutrition label so much higher than the sum of the individually listed types of carbs below it?

Looking at the back of a can and for the Carbs it says…

Total Carbohydrates 8g, Dietary Fiber 0g, Total Sugars 1g,
Etc….

Where does that 8g come from? Ive seen this on every single label I’ve ever looked at

Wait what? When do they break carbs down that way? The only math I ever see is Net Carbs = Total Carbs – Fiber. Carbs are just carbs otherwise and aren’t broken down further.

The rest are carbs that aren’t sugars or fiber. Flour is an example. Sugars are carbs, but carbs aren’t necessarily sugars. The breakdown is there for people with specific nutritional concerns.

Legally with nutritional labels anything under 1 calorie can be 0 calories.

So if it’s says 0 calories, it’s technically 0, but could
Be anything from 0.1 to .9 calories.

The subcategories under carbs are not all the components that make up total carbs, but the two types of carbs that many people are specifically trying to track in their diets (sugar and fibre).
