Why are there 100s of seagulls settled on a newly-levelled bit of land in the middle of the country?

So I live on a housing development and everyday there is always another bit of land around me that is being: levelled, built on or moved into. It’s an ever changing scenery at the moment.

However, I had started to noticed that on a former field that has been dug down and levelled off in preparation for the next phase build, hundreds of seagulls are sat, settled and nestled on the ground. What comfort do they take in this particular area.

As a side note, we live in the middle of the country that’s at least 100 miles away from the nearest sea.

You can see something similar behind tractors that plough fields. The ploughing unearths worms and other animals that are on the seagull’s menu.

I am sure the reason why they are on these construction sites is a similar one. Not sure if they really find that much, compared to behind tractors, but some worms might be around

There isn’t any bird named “*sea*” gull. They are just gulls. They live in a variety of habitats.

I’ve lived less than 10 miles from the shore of Lake Erie my whole life and have seen this multiple times.
6/10 times I would say that it is a day with a strong north/northeast wind that really kicks the lake up with 4-6ft waves which makes it really hard for seagulls to do, well, seagull stuff on the lake.

Not confirmed in any capacity but I think they come inland in search for food when they cannot feed on the lake due to weather, and a tractor with fresh earth is a giant bullseye for an easy meal.

Could also do with the lunar cycle, full moons = fish feed on baitfish at night, which = less baitfish food for seagulls during the day so 100 miles might be what they have to do for food that day
