Why are there 100s of seagulls settled on a newly-levelled bit of land in the middle of the country?

So I live on a housing development and everyday there is always another bit of land around me that is being: levelled, built on or moved into. It’s an ever changing scenery at the moment.

However, I had started to noticed that on a former field that has been dug down and levelled off in preparation for the next phase build, hundreds of seagulls are sat, settled and nestled on the ground. What comfort do they take in this particular area.

As a side note, we live in the middle of the country that’s at least 100 miles away from the nearest sea.

There isn’t any bird named “*sea*” gull. They are just gulls. They live in a variety of habitats.
