Because, believe it or not, 1024 is more even than 1000. You can divide 1000 by 2 only three times and you will reach an odd number (1000/2 = 500, 500/2 = 250, 250/2 = 125 odd).

On the other hand you can divide 1024 by 2 10 times and you will reach the smallest positive number there is by doing it. 1024/2 = 512, 512/2 = 256, 256/2 = 128, 128/2 = 64, 64/2 = 32, 32/2 = 16, 16/2 = 8, 8/2 = 4, 4/2 = 2, 2/2 = 1.
