From what I’ve read top mounted fridges are more efficient since the condenser is away from the freezer and the cool air dropping can be used to cool the fridge part, but this doesn’t explain why they seem to be double the price.

What do you mean by top mounted and bottom mounted?
Are you talking about the location of the compressor?
