So, ask a group of microbiologists sometime “what makes a microorganism alive or not” and grab popcorn. I actually did this (me, non-scientist working w scientists). The debate got heated.
I mention this because I think the question you ask is great, but it also uncovers a more fundamental question. If we don’t agree, scientifically, about what is alive and what isn’t—or even the criteria for deciding—then are we on a wild goose chase anyway? Do we need to return to first principles? I e wondered this for years.
