why are/were checks used so frequently when all of our bank information is on the checks and can be easily stolen?

Does anybody use a check? Like the paper thing from the middle ages?
I got one from my grandma for christmas in the mid 90s. Was so difficult to use that, had to travel out of town to find a bank to turn it into money, but lost most to fees, and with the buss fare i ended up loosing money.
Is it not possible to use a more modern solution. Many countries have a banking system that can be used online and its much easier for everyone
