Eau Claire, WI, is 9 degrees south of Edmonton, AB, but their winter temps are very similar. However, cities 9 degrees south of Eau Claire like Memphis, TN, are much warmer in the winter. Why is this?

Weather is not solely determined by how far north or south of the equator you are. Nearby water sources can affect temperature, nearby elevation changes can affect temperature, where the weather typically blows in from can affect temperature, and even things like the amount and type of structures and roads in the area can affect temperature. I can’t speak to the exact factors that make Eau Claire and Edmonton have similar temps in the winter, but it’s going to be the summation of many things.

As for Memphis, that has warmer winters in part because of the heat generated by Elvis spinning in his grave after what they’ve done with Graceland.
