Wood is naturally variable.

It’s possible — but a lot of work, which means a lot of expense — to pick appropriately matching wood pieces and lay them in nice symmetric patterns. You have to make it *perfect* though, because when it’s symmetric, every flaw stands out a lot.

It’s much easier and cheaper to lay the wood out semi-randomly, so that you can just use whatever you have naturally. There’s no such thing as “wrong” in that case.

Note that it’s still “fake random” — truly random would actually not look very good.

Wood flooring is laid in symmetrical patterns all the time, herringbone for example. Wood itself though varies in appearance, determined by how the tree grew in its environment. With imitation wood, if it all looked the same it would be too obvious that it’s fake.
