The most likely thing to happen in a car accident is that your body is thrown forward. The most likely thing to happen in a plane is turbulence which bounces you up.

Seat belts on planes are meant to protect passengers from turbulence, which is an up and down movement of the aircraft. Restraining passengers at the waist is sufficient on an airplane. Seatbelts in cars are meant to protect passengers in crashes which are primarily front/back/lateral forces. In a car the torso benefits from the additional third point of restraint.

I’d say airline seatbelts are more useful from protecting you from bouncing off the ceiling in turbulence than anything else. Three point belts wouldn’t add much here.

They do in business class. Not sure why they are ok with everyone getting injured in the cheap seats but up front they give us airbags and helmets too.
