You hear about people that hit “gushers” back in the day. Do we not hear about them now or is it no longer a thing that happens?

To add to other answers, gushers certainly still happen. One famous gusher that happened in 2010 was Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. It killed 11 people and spilled 5 million barrels of oil into the sea, causing one of the largest environmental disasters in history. Gushers are not a good thing, and never were. They are spectacular though, and for this reason they’ve somewhat misleadingly been featured in the media.
