why aren’t tranquilizer guns used on humans during stand-offs

Like, instead of tasers, live ammunition, etc, why isn’t there some sort of investment in making tranquilizer guns to incapacitate criminals?

Because tranquilizer guns don’t work like in the movies. They’re not magical safe night-night juice. The dose of drug it takes to knock someone out without risking death depends on a variety of factors, especially if it’s something that needs to take effect rapidly. Never mind potential interactions with drugs they may or may not already have in their system.

They are *sometimes* used on large animals, but there are a variety of steps Fish & Wildlife have to go through to ensure the animal isn’t harmed (there’s usually a wildlife veterinarian involved), and even then… the process is risky – too risky to be used on humans.

Tasers are faster and more reliable. There are plenty of rules and protocols in place even for those, because they have their own set of risks, but they at least don’t require a doctor to calculate dosage first, and they’re safer than firearms.

Firearms are only *supposed* to be a last resort when de-escalation and other non-lethal options … aren’t an option, but that’s a much more complicated and controversial conversation.

Everyone saying cops don’t do it because of the medicine not existing have no idea what they are talking about. Cops use ketamine literally all the time to subdue subjects. They just use normal needles cause flying needles aren’t the best. They are hard to aim, must be pretty close to the target, most dart guns you get one shot then have to reload, etc. The easiest thing for them is just have 2 cops hold you while they jam you full of a bunch of ketamine and then fight you for another minute till you can’t physically fight anymore.

People do die from it and yeah cops or the emts that administer it get away with it 90% of the time and day the person had a prior health condition.

As a lotnof others have said, because it’s unreliable and dangerous essentially.

It wasn’t tranquilizer darts, but the Russians tried to do a “knockout gas” thing during a hostage crisis in 2002. They knocked all the insurgents out and shot them while unconscious. But, they also [gassed 130 of the hostages to death](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_theater_hostage_crisis)
