Why can local broadcasting survive using an advertising revenue model but internet based newspapers can’t/won’t and instead rely on subscriptions?

This is in the US. I know other countries have different broadcasting support models.

US broadcasters actually get [about 30% of revenue from ads](https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/news-insights/blog/ad-revenue-playing-a-decreasing-role-in-cable-network-revenue) and the rest from retransmission fees collected via cable companies. [On average $21.48/mo per cable subscriber](https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/news-insights/research/broadcast-tv-fees-burden-monthly-consumer-bills-in-2024). Regardless of that video is a more engaging media format than newspaper. It just brings more revenue.
