Why can the brain not adapt to and ignore tinnitus much like one can with clothes, smells and other sounds?

In the case of loud noise exposure, the microscopic hairs are damaged. If our brains are so adaptive, why can’t our brains adapt to the input being different?

Because the brain is responsible for it. Tinnitus is caused by the brain not your hearing system, what I’m calling the ear and all the parts in it. Basically when you have hearing damage the brain is like “Hmmm it’s quiet … TOO QUIET I’ll make them think they are hearing a high pitched ringing noise. Problem solved”
