– why can water taps provide very hot water but not very cold water

We can turn our taps to easily provide us with hot water when doing the dishes, but if we want a cold cup of water we need to add ice – why?

you have a hot water heater, but not a water cooler. so the cold water is whatever temperature the water in the mains happens to be. which is usually a good deal cooler than ambient because so much of it is underground.
