Why can we tell when people are older, even without visible wrinkles?

I don’t know how to explain this but when I see pictures of when people were younger vs older, it’s obvious which is which even without telltale signs.

I saw a picture of a celeb when they were younger and they had no real distinction other than a slimmer face but I can tell they were older. Like I don’t know why, it’s not like they have wrinkles, they have great skin, nothing that screams “Old” but it’s like something that they had when they were younger isn’t there.

You lose fat and skin elasticity in your face as you age. So an older person’s skin will sit differently on the bones compared to when they were younger. My cheeks are more sunken in now than 10 years ago, without any change in weight.

Our noses and ears keep growing,

We notice this subconsciously and it is how we age people on sight.

Out of curiosity, was this inspired by the pic of JLaw that hit the front page a few days ago? Because I had this exact same question after skimming past it but didn’t give it much thought.

The loss of subcutaneous fat is far more aging than wrinkles and no cream can pretend to tackle it. As it goes, it reveals cheekbones and jaw and for some people they get more beautiful.

Look at the hands. It’s difficulty to hide age on the hands. There’s really no plastic surgery that can be done there to fixed crepey skin and such.

Gray and white hair is usually a dead giveaway. Plus, skin loses elasticity and sags as it ages.

In addition to the answers already given, the appearance of our eyes changes as we age. Children have pristine, very reflective eyeballs with mostly solid white surfaces and vividly colored irises. This luster seems to fade slightly in adulthood.

I really notice it when someone is looking at me. A child/teen looking right into my eyes almost looks like they have “glass” eyes and it’s as if they’re looking through/past me, whereas an adult’s eyes seem to be less shiny and much more focused right on me.

Anyway, all of this boils down to the fact that we are very sensitive to tiny changes in facial features.

People can intuitively read the loss of fat in the face, the slight sagging of the skin, the presence of a few white hairs, the thinning of the hair, the clouding of the eyes, sun damage, and other very subtle changes that all add up to signal an aging face.
