Why can we tell when people are older, even without visible wrinkles?

I don’t know how to explain this but when I see pictures of when people were younger vs older, it’s obvious which is which even without telltale signs.

I saw a picture of a celeb when they were younger and they had no real distinction other than a slimmer face but I can tell they were older. Like I don’t know why, it’s not like they have wrinkles, they have great skin, nothing that screams “Old” but it’s like something that they had when they were younger isn’t there.

In addition to the answers already given, the appearance of our eyes changes as we age. Children have pristine, very reflective eyeballs with mostly solid white surfaces and vividly colored irises. This luster seems to fade slightly in adulthood.

I really notice it when someone is looking at me. A child/teen looking right into my eyes almost looks like they have “glass” eyes and it’s as if they’re looking through/past me, whereas an adult’s eyes seem to be less shiny and much more focused right on me.

Anyway, all of this boils down to the fact that we are very sensitive to tiny changes in facial features.
