why cannot we eradicate all cars and use public transports only?

For all the reasons listed here and so many more, I’d love to see cars become part of the new public transportation system for small cities and rural areas. Similar to taxi’s but and better paying than Uber. Basically a government job that has a regular paycheck and health insurance.
I especially want this for seniors who don’t want to lose their independence but know they really shouldn’t be driving either. We have senior busses for doctors visits but they’re difficult to schedule and usually only have one passenger anyway.
