Why can’t antibiotic syrup (or any other strong medicine syrup) taste at least good?

I’ve always hated the taste, texture and smell of them, but never understood why they were so bad.

Medication can be harmful or fatal in large doses. They make them taste bad so children don’t *want* to take them. If you look up ChubbyEmu on youtube, there’s an episode of a child who at vitamin gummies because he thought they were candy. It almost severely damaged his bones.

Lots of chemicals and medicines have things added to them intentionally to make them taste bad — to prevent people from accidentally ingesting too much without realizing it’s harmful, etc.

It’s worth noting that many drugs [by their nature](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3772669/) taste bitter:

> Bitter taste is thought to have evolved as a deterrent against ingesting toxic substances, which may explain why many drugs taste bitter.

Our taste buds are very sensitive to bitter, and there’s nothing you can really do to the substance to mask the taste.
