Why can’t antibiotic syrup (or any other strong medicine syrup) taste at least good?

I’ve always hated the taste, texture and smell of them, but never understood why they were so bad.

It’s worth noting that many drugs [by their nature](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3772669/) taste bitter:

Our taste buds are very sensitive to bitter, and there’s nothing you can really do to the substance to mask the taste.
