At least where I live, if I make a transfer between my accounts (with different banks) too late on a Friday, the money won’t be available until Monday. But there are no humans involved in this process – it seems to me that could be instantaneous as far as the technology is concerned. What am I missing?

I live in Japan, and every account transfer and debit shows up in my account instantaneously. Credit takes a few days I’d assume because of temporary transactions.
It shocked me when I started using my US bank account again and everything took a few days to show up.

It gives them a chance to process all of your debit transactions while they sit on your deposits for a while to be sure to maximize the number of overdrafts they can charge you…just ask wells fargo.
