They are a permanent cell type. So are muscle cells. They are so specialized and they aren’t supposed to die, so we don’t have stem cells lying around ready to replace them.

In contract there are labile cells which are constantly regenerating, like your skin cells, the cells in your gut, and your blood cells.

Peripheral nerves can regenerate parts of themselves, though if the whole cell dies it cannot.
