Why can’t the “waste gas” on an Oil Rig be used purposefully? Why can’t we redirect it somewhere to maybe produce electricity?

Some fields collect it and sell it as natural gas. If there is only a little, they flare it off. A Texas Tech class project made a steam powered well that used gas to make steam to pump the oil. But, steam engines have so many parts, it’s not very practical.
