Why can’t we go to sleep on demand like how we are controlling other parts of the body?

We can stop breathing when we want to. We can also “tell” our body to do what we want such as moving, holding, typing, etc. So why can’t we just “tell” our brain to go to sleep immediately instead of having to wait for it to fall asleep.

A lot of things have to happen for our bodies to be “prepped” for proper sleep. Although this is made harder to explain because some people can just “konk out” so to speak. My sister can lay down and be sleeping within 15 minutes in the middle of the day after a full night’s rest the night before.

I guess the best answer is that it is involuntary, and the best you can do to influence it is to prep yourself for sleep (dark, cold room/no distracting sounds/etc.)

A caveman was once born with that ability and he didn’t get a chance to reproduce because a tiger ate him, because he decided to be asleep.

If you slowly fall asleep, you’re more likely to respond to stimuli and wake up, like a tiger coming to eat you.

We can only control muscles and not even all muscles. Breathing and moving and typing are all just moving muscles

You can’t demand your lungs start breathing unconsciously

Now you’ve read this you’re conciously controlling your breathing for the next 5 minutes 😅 you’re welcome.

Probably because when you *want* to fall asleep and when it’s been *evolutionarily safe* to fall asleep have been different.
