Anecdote to support the other explanations. My son has muscular dystrophy, so muscles that are used to breath are weak. He can’t take a big deep breath if he needs more air, like when you cough or yawn. So his body compensates by breathing faster. This is bad because 1, it tires him out and 2, CO2 isn’t expelled effectively and it builds up. For this reason he uses a bipap (similar to cpap) when sleeping and when sick. The machine gives slower deep breaths
