Why can’t we just make our own internets, or separate ones that no one can access?

What you’re looking for is called a VPN, which is a little confusing because we use the term to mean multiple different things now. Using secure tunnels, multiple Internet-connected sites can make a single internal network that is not visible to the outside world.

Many companies and educational establishments have done so, making internal sharing of information quick and easy, while protecting them from outside hacking and copying.

what makes more sense, paving your own roadways, or just putting a fence around your property?

You can and do but the information is what you want.

I have a local network, but it is connected to the rest of the world so I can access things like Reddit.

That’s basically how the internet works already. It’s just a series of independent networks made public through dns. You enter a url, your dns tells you where to go, you go through a series of individual networks stringed together to reach your target destination. It’s called a web for a reason. There is no single “internet”, it’s what we use to describe this web of connections we’ve created. We’ve all decided on the standard way to do things to connect and add sites etc.

You can. It’s exactly what a lot of companies have. One I worked at had a global network, the works, points of presence all over the world, connections to people’s homes etc.

All private.

you have one in your home between the computers in your home on your home router. the same is for the company you work for. however you might get bored looking at your or your coworkers cat pictures so you could install your own cables between buildings (they do this at universities and large office complexes) but that takes time expertise and money or you can buy that ready made!

You can do both if you wanted to. But you already have the internet for the same thing and nobody wants to waste money.

Many companies have Intranets – an “Internet” only for employees of that company. Instead of “www” server addresses, they commonly use “w3” instead.

I think you’re going to have to explain a little bit more about what you mean by this?

And what it is exactly that you want?
