There are any number of methods to do so. You can convert coal, grain, grease, algae, and what not to a fuel similar to gas or diesel. Diesel engines often need little or no work to convert to use biofuels. There is a sizable market for bio fuels today. (Literally there is a gas station in town I could fuel a diesel car or truck in town where I live that sells biofuels.) There are even technologies that can literally convert CO2 in the air into gasoline.

The problem is that there is no free lunch. To produce a fuel like gasoline you need energy. This can be electricity, heat, or chemical energy. So you need some thing like solar, wind, or other renewables to provide electrical energy. Or a lot of crop land to provide chemical energy. Or fossil fuels for chemical/electrical energy….
