Rule of thumb: every step away from your processor is an extra order of magnitude.

Registers work in nanoseconds; cache in microseconds; RAM in milliseconds; storage disks in seconds.

You can *absolutely* page memory to SSD. It will be hilariously awful and horribly slow.
