Why can’t we pipe water to southwest US?

We pipeline oil from Canada to Texas, why can’t we pipeline water from the Great lakes to the south?

Edit: thank you all who replied, I’ve gathered that it is technically possible, but would come with a huge amount of legal, environmental, and practical issues due to the amount of water that would actually be needed. It sounds like there are far more practical solutions available if the need became dire enough.

Whose water are they going to take could be a big problem.

I feel like the cost to insurance companies dealing with fires and payouts would offset some of those “it’s too expensive to pipe water” claims.

Look up NAWAPA on YouTube. It’s a plan from the 50s to transport vast quantities of water from the north of Canada to supply a good chunk of the entire US with fresh water.

It would reshape the entire geography of North America.

I read years ago that Cali homes, for the most part, don’t have water meters. Is this true?

I think it would be better to ship excess flood waters in shorter hops across states excess flood waters. This way you may not cause major environmental harm. Floods are natural and they to serve a purpose so there will always be harm.

We are worried about sea level rise and are experiencing draught on the west coast. Desalination seems to be a two birds one stone solution?

Why would we need to?
Millions of gallons of water fall out of the sky every year- all we need to do is not let it run into the ocean.
