Memory is a weird thing, and we still don’t know everything about it. Generally though, you’re more likely to remember things you’ve been studying for a long time, as they are more encoded in your long-term memory. Cramming is inefficient because your brain can’t just photocopy everything it sees in one sitting, it needs time to digest that information slowly and build deeper connections with it over time. Plus, stress, exhaustion and rushing yourself all negatively affect your ability to remember as well.
Even if you wanted to memorize stuff, it is much more effective to be systematic. This means consistent reading of the material and somehow organizing that knowledge in your mind. Just trying to remember random facts without a structure is very difficult. Memory can also be trained and that requires focus and concentration. It also works better if you’re somewhat relaxed in a non distracting environment.
