And you can reduce creases in paper. Lightly wet it and place it under a weight as it dries. Or use a clothing iron with steam and weight it as it dries

But like yourmikehere said you’ve broken some of the fibers. It’s not going unbreak. Paper is like a matte of dry spaghetti. Once the spaghetti breaks, you can’t really make it whole again.

Paper is so common we take it for granted. This is a great question. Paper is a mat made from the pulp fibers of wood, and sometimes other plants or materials like cotton, etc. when you crease it you shift the fibers and probably break some. That makes it difficult, if not impossible, to get back to the smooth state.
