It seems like back before modern medicine was a thing, prescribing arsenic for almost all ailments was all the rage. I’m going to assume that people weren’t just idiots in the past and that there was a reason for that.
Do small amounts of arsenic make you feel temporarily good or something like that? Is it a case of arsenic being useful for one specific illness and doctors then prescribing it for everything? Basically, why would they prescribe poison to people???

There are high arsenic levels in the well water of most of the properties in the community where we live. Water treatment here is fringy snake oil salesman territory and it’s buyer beware. Everybody either buys bottled water, hauls in water or goes all in on RO/whole house filtration systems. I was discussing this with a long time local (5th generation) that told me that their family has used the well water for drinking and bathing for decades without illness or ill effect and even considers it a reason for good health.
