We never really had them, we evolved from an ape-like ancestor. Apes are similar to monkeys except for the fact they lack a tail or are generally larger and more prone to bipedal (or close to it) movement.

Tails however serve a purpose that would interfere with our form of locomotion, they act as a balancing rod, something unnecessary for bipedal movement.
