I dunno if I’m remembering this wrong but I seem to remember the black bars along the top and bottom of the screen getting bigger and the picture also kind of transforming. Something to do with aspect ratio? Seem to recall it happening at the end of the first Independence Day

No, this never happened in the movie theater, where the movie was shown full screen.
Some **horrible** transfers of movies for TV used “pan and scan” to select a part of the movie to show on the TV screen, which did have a different aspect ratio than the movie. Alas, the credits filled the screen with writing and couldn’t be shown in this way, so the image had to be shrunken and the bars shown.
