Why did the British invent the imperial system and then abandon it?

Lots of countries invented their own system, and they abandoned those for metrics for standardisation
Because it was rubbish when it came to standardisation on a global scale whilst their industries ramped up.

We like to mix things up. Distances in miles, short measurements in metres. Speed in mph. Milk in litres, beer in pints.
Weight of people in stones, weight of vegetables in kg.
British didn’t invent the imperial system, they simply relabeled and declared their own legacy garbage that has been reused and rehashed in a nonsensical way since before written records. They abandoned it because it’s obsolete garbage. SI is superior in every way.
Same reason as everyone. You need a system so you invent it, another system is created and is better so you switch.
