Why did the world stop using ‘Ma’am and Sir’ when addressing people?

I used to use those words frequently. Some get offended because the think it is ageist. They think it’s a sign of respecting elders, even if I’m addressing someone younger.
Also, I’m trying to get away from addressing people based on gender.
It’s just a poor fit for the current times.
Traditional Southern families still teach their kids to say Sir and Ma’am. Especially in the more rural areas. We taught our kids.
In the UK it’s mostly gone because it came about from class hierarchy, which all but the old money aristocracy is trying to move away from.
I’m all for it. Much like I’m all for companies not having formal dress codes for non-customer facing positions. Formality where it isn’t needed just feels forced and unnecessary.
I don’t think the world did. Additionally, people from the American south say “ma’am” and “sir” when they require you to repeat yourself. Very confusing.
I still do, so no clue what you are talking about. And it is a common rule in our countries middle schools
We did not. I’m surrounded by people that use them daily. Maybe it’s just specific to your specific area?
