If you try to swallow multiple times, it is increasingly difficult to swallow as your throat gets drier. Why is that?

Saliva moistens your throat, and when you try to swallow a bunch of it, you remove more of it from your mouth than your salivary glands are motivated to produce.

It’s the same reason an engine needs oil to function. It decreases friction and lets the food glide smoothly down your throat.
