The word you’re looking for is bitrate.

If you have a water tank that can hold 1,080 gallons, we can use the regular water hose to fill it up. But if we use the water hose that we use on 4000 gallon tanks it’s a much bigger pipe. We can put more in it, and in this example fill the tank quicker.

What’s actually happening is in addition to more pixels, there is more defined information for color and detail. I.e. more bytes per second. Even if you can’t hold all the extra lines of resolution, you’re still working with a picture that contains more visual information.
